Many products have a culinary use and another usage around the house. Such as alcohol, popular in many beverages, it's also used to preserve animals in jars, clean cuts, and is used in markers.
Oil used for frying foods and in baked goods is becoming a new source of fuel to run diesel cars.
The FDA has approved polysorbate for food usage and cosmetic usages, because it is safe.

Sorry, Cay, but the can your wife uses reads Spam, not Span.
I'm sure it's just that you're reading with one eye and your blighted eye :_| would have been in charge of seeing the second hump on the "m." :(

It is rather alarming that a chemical in a cosmetic would also be used in food products.

I'd be interested to know more from Michele.

But my guess is the Polysorbate is used to emulsify the shortening and water in Cool Whip and the oil and water in the bath gel.

Hmmm...I can guarantee it's not in any food that I eat...Educating yourself about nutrition is the smartest thing you can do..

Thanks TWright .... I think.

I never liked Cool Whip, but now there's even more evidence.

Polysorbate is an oily liquid. It is a class of emulsifiers used in some pharmaceuticals and food preparation. It is often used in cosmetics to solubilise essential oils into water based products. Polysorbates are derived from PEG-ylated sorbitan (a derivative of sorbitol) esterified with fatty acids. Surfactants that are esters of plain (non-PEG-ylated) sorbitan with fatty acids are usually referred to by the name Span.

I found this on the web hope it helps.

Concern about an ingredient

Posted: May 21, 2007 10:10 AM
Hi. I am worried.

This morning I noticed that my Bath Gel contains the same ingredients as in Cool Whip.

Polysorbate!

What is Polysorbate and how come it is in my Bath Gel and also in food I am supposed to eat?

Thank You.
