I bought the 3 pound tub of Philly Cream Cheese at Costco, and called the number on the package for Kraft Foods to ask how long the cream cheese would be good once opened. The answer was 10 days. Seems a bit short to me, as I'm pretty sure we've been eating from this tub for 2 weeks, and it still looks and tastes normal. However, they do not recommend consuming this product after 10 days of opening. There you go. I also asked if the product could be frozen, but freezing is not recommended, (not due to health concerns), as the consistency could become either crumbly or runny.

I usually buy the big block of cream cheese at Costco and then put it in a ziploc bag and write the "use by" date on the outside. I've never once had it go bad before that date and it's great to have around to whip up a quick bowl of dip or mini cheese cake or spread on a bagel.

I admit too that as long as it isn't fuzzy and doesn't have stuff growing on it, I'll use it. But yes, in doubt, throw it out.

I've had cream cheese that has been open for a while and as long as it isn't "fuzzy" I still use it. But if you are questioning it a new package of cream cheese is between 79 cents and $1.50 so you aren't out a ton of money.

I totally agree with you on this, and I'm really bad about forgetting things in the freezer an refrigerator. This is the area where I am trying to save most on my grocery bills. Eating what I buy in a timely manner, and not letting them lie around until I'm not sure if they are safe anymore.

The cream cheese is still indate, I was just wondering if the cream cheese had a certain discard after so many days of being opened time frame. I have had certain foods that would say throw away 7 days after opening.

i have used cream cheese up to a week past the expiration date and it was fine. just keep it tightly wrapped in the fiol, and store it in an air tight container.
if i have left over cream cheese, i make fruit pizza, etc. i always try to use it up...

That would be hard for anyone to answer for you, I think. Each box has a "best when used by" date stamped on it, so it would depend on what the date is on your box.

A box I bought last week has a use by date of Aug. 19th, but I have bought some that had a use by date a week away.

Of course, the use by date does not always mean it is not good after that date, but in time, it gets an "off" taste, kind of soured taste...sort of like milk does after its use by date.

I'm pleasantly surprised that so many food items have expiration or use by dates on them now. Many stores do not pull expired items from the shelves, so I am pretty good at checking the dates on everything I buy now so they will stay fresh as long as possible.

I have a pkg of cream cheese. I used 1/2 the block about 2 weeks ago in a recipe and stored the other 1/2 in the frig in a ziplock bag. I was wondering if it is still good? How long can I keep an opened pkg of cream cheese in the frig?
