I am a huge fan of cooking a Cook's Ham Shank or Butt portion. I only buy them when they are QUITE affordable, less than $1 a pound. I always get the largest I can find, put it in a large enough pot to cover about 3/4 with water. Cover, bring to a light boil, turn down to a teenie simmer and let go for about 2 hrs (teenie simmer). Take off the heat and allow to cool, covered, in the pot w/the liquid for 1 hr or so. I slice it for the 1st meal w/whatever sides you like and have plenty of leftovers for at least one more meal. The bone & cooking water turns into THEE best split pea soup ever once all the "real" ham meat is used up. I find it very affordable and VERY delicious, whether the ham slice meals or the soup.

My son actually prefers it without meat, sometimes slathered on toast.

When the Hamburger Helper meals are on sale, I will use 2 boxes to one pound of meat. Biscuits, and at least one veggie is good to use as well. Or, you can just make the Hamburger Helper meals without meat to cut costs even more. (We are a family of 6 and have left overs often to use for the next day.)

Welcome to the Kraftfoods community, bigwheels1. This certainly sounds like a recipe for feeding a large family and at a reasonable cost.

I used to cook for a large group and found Kraft cheese makes a lot of things easier. I layered wieners (sliced like nickles) thinly sliced potatoes , and craft cheese into a 9x13 sprayed pan. After I put in as many layers as was feasible, I sprinkled on seasonings. After that I poured in 2 cups of milk mixed with 3 T of cornstarch and baked until top turned brown. This casserole feeds the group well, and has a lot to offer when you are trying to save money.

Hamburger goulash is a great way to stretch a meal and filling. Brown hamburger and chopped onion. Add a couple cans or more of chopped tomoatoes. Stir and simmer a few minutes while noodles cook (any kind, but elbows work very well.). When noodles are done, drain and add to the hamburger mix or add the hamburger mix to the noodles. Add a little salt and pepper and serve. Really easy for a big family. This is something most kids will eat. If you have Kraft shredded cheese, sprinkle on top of each serviing for added protein and good taste. For those who like parmesan cheese, sprinkle this on top also.

Hello, my husband and I have four children so we know about making meals that last. We try to make some of the easy meatloaf recipes shown on the Kraft site. We usually have a little bit left over so they can then make meatloaf sandwiches the next day for lunch. We save any amount of leftovers and then one night a week we have a leftover dinner where I heat everything up and everyone picks at whatever they want to put on their plate. Hope this helps and best wishes with the children.

If you have a crock pot, make a large pork or beef roast, use for a first meal, then leftovers can be sandwiches, soup, bbqed leftover meat in tortillas or buns......or even a big meatloaf is great to use the same way as leftovers or make a lot of meatballs and use for subs with marina sauce and cheeses.....
Most kids do like chicken, mac and cheese, hot dogs(if they can eat them).......even keep crackers such as Ritz with cheese slices and lunchmeat.....
Good luck to you all.

Hi nesesweetgirl, What a 'blessing"! , 11/14 children , I think thats wonderful that they are willing and able to do that. My husband and I, both came from families of 5 and wanted 12 children, but I couldn't have anymore then 2, so I counted myself 'Blessed"!! and kept at lot of other peoples children and our house was the "hang out" during our 2 sons growing up years, . But, you didn't ask about that, Just about any recipe can be doubled, even trippled. You might even check for recipes under "pot lucks", God Bless, annaskf

You are posting on a kraft food site. Try looking up recipes for dinners, appetizers, and more on the kraft food website itself. Also,www.pillsbury.com, www.eversave.com,www.recipes.com.and www.womansday.com/recipes all have some great recipes for you to try. Who knows maybe you will find something new you can fix for them that they will really enjoy a lot.

Have you ever tried to fix them a salad, and some chicken sishka bobs? Also, a lot of children enjoy tacos, pizza, spaghetti, and hamburger helper. If they are vegetarians try making them a vegetable pizza with broccoli, green peppers, onions, and black olives on it along with the cheese and sauce. Try making homemade egg rolls and fix rice with it, or perhaps a stir fry would work.

Hello, we are helping out a family that has 11 kids and is overseas adopting 3 more for a total of 14. A friend of mine & I are taking care of 9 of the 11 and we need help with fixing quick & large quantity meals. These kids like to eat all the time. We try to make the 3 main meals they get large so they can survive on just small snacking. And I know they are getting tired of soup & sandwiches. Please help. Thank you.
