Does everyone put jelly on their lil smokies?

I never did. We stick pretzel sticks in them and dip them in chinese mustard.

Little smokies with a sweet and sour sauce (1 jar of apricot preserves and two to three tablespoosn of dijon mustard). Simmer little smokies in sauce until warmed through. Serve on a platter with olives, pickles, cheese and crackers makes a great appetizer.
I'd have a dessert table of assorted tea cakes, frosted in delicate pastel shades. If you have a pizzele iron, make cones from pizzele waffles. Fill them with mints, nuts, and small chocolate candies. If not, make your cones from paper lace doilies.

You could make a cake that has a may pole sticking out of it. I hear that many regular grocery stores now sell unfrosted cakes, so you can save time.

You could grill a variety of kabobs on wooden skewers. They would be "may pole"-ish and potentially very colorful.

Here is an awesome recipe for bacon wrapped smokies. Use toothpicks with ribbon wrapped around them to sinuate the maypole!

Asparagus not only are a true sign of late spring/early summer, but they're shaped almost like maypoles. Just make sure you steam them to tender-crisp, and not to the point where they wilt. They need to be kind of like little maypoles themselves. This recipe almost works, but I think the dressing they suggest would be too strong for the flavor of asparagus. I prefer them with nothing added. But if they're not too wilted, you can serve them standing upright on the plate (maybe a few tied with a bit of roasted red pepper) to resemble the maypole. Even little kiddies, the kind that say they hate vegetables, would be charmed by that, don't you think? If you provide a nice mayo based dipping sauce (Ranch dressing is always appropriate these days) it'll be a great addition.

I hope it doesn't rain on your party. Can you move your pole inside if necessary?

Hey great idea!
Not only should you have a May pole, but you should have everyone bring a May day basket with knickknacks, or food items, or just little treats. You can then have a Yankee Swap! That way everyone gets a present!
Food items should remind you of spring or summer coming up. I think of bruschetta or anything with shrimp. It might be fun to get some shrimp and make a homemade cocktail sauce. Homemade egg and potato salad with paprika. Summer sausage and cheddar on crusty bread. You could make Bahama Mama's or a big punch with rum floating summer fruits. You could get a big watermelon and pump it with vodka!
You could serve kool-aid and Tang for the kids!
Wow, this is exciting, I want to have a May Day party now!

To celebrate May day. It's customary to have a big pole to wrap with ribbons.

Oh that reminds me of little smokies in mustard and grape jelly. I've heard raves about that recipe. http://www.cdkitchen.com/recipes/recs/78/Cocktail_Wieners_with_Mustard_Jelly45383.shtml

I find that Lil' Smokies are always appropriate for a Maypole party. You mite try a recipe like:

May Pole Party

Now that Easter is over, I'm starting to plan my May Pole party. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for "party foods." I saw a cute maypole cocktail on semi-homemade that I think I'll make. Maybe some grilled sausages? Or shrimp? Any good ideas?
