I have to admit, I am terrified of the idea of toothpicks in the dishwasher. They will absorb everything from cleaner to bacteria. I just can't see this as a reasonable means to save money. Toothpicks are .50c per box, maybe as the previous poster stated, plastic would be fine but wood???!!!

TableScrape, Maybe you should try a pack of plastic ones, easier to keep clean and sanitary...plus no splinters. :O

Welcome to the community, challmation!

How interesting that you make your own detergents and wash! I don't know that I would have the patience for that. lol

You say it's easy, though, so I may have to go on a Google hunt and see if I could do some! Thanks for the tip!

Frugal? Absolutely. I am so economical that I take my finger and swipe the egg shells to get every little bit of egg white into my bowl. Cheap? Only when it is of acceptable quality at an economical price or forced upon me by inflation, put all rubber bands from vegetables around my salt box as a handy storage place, save the strong waxed paper cereal box liners to crush dry bread, crackers, etc. and use grocery plastic bags as waste paper can liners, folding a few to place in the bottom for the next time.

ok i try to cut corners any way i can on the every day stuff. I tell my kids that's where people spend the most money. stuff you use or do every day. Well this summer i learned a few receipes for home made laundry detergent, dish washer detergent and body wash. all were very easy and quick to do the only one still to be perfected is the body wash it's just not enough suds for me. i don'thave the website in front of me but you could just google hmoemade "what ever" it get some great sites.

When I buy bananas and they go bad I peel them stick them in a bag and freeze to make banana bread or smoothie. I only buy meat that is discounted due to going to expire soon or they cut it open and rewrap therefore not be able to resell at full price. I once bought a 10 lb ham with bone in for 3.50 because it was rewrap. Tasted great to me.

Welcome to the community nobakequeen. =)

You got me thinking; hamburger buns can get 'flakey' when frozen. I bet if you wanted it really fine you could use a small grater size while they're still frozen.

Very good tip on using the leftovers, thanks for sharing!

I know this will sound really cheap but here goes..... My husband (6' 2" tall and 300 lbs. ) uses a lot of toothpicks after dinner. I save them up for a week and put them in a laundry bag for delicates and then I put the bag in the dishwasher and the toothpicks come out squeaky clean. Waste not, want not!

I NEVER buy the prepackaged snacks for my kids lunches for school. I have very small plastic containers to put them in(yes-chips, sandwiches, everything). I also do not buy juice boxes. I have a small bottle to put juice or milk in. It really does not take that much time to pack these things myself. This not only saves money but by doing these things it also it is way better for the environment.

I make my own bread crumbs, too, but I never thought of using frozen hamburger buns. I always seem to have a couple of bags in my freezer, but can't always think of a use for them.

I have used them for garlic toast before and that's great.

Sometimes I use leftover buns to make mini pizzas or garlic cheese bread for snacks. They think they're getting such a treat ;)

I'm a single parent with one teenage son at home. When we buy hamburg or hot bog buns we don't use all the buns. So, I freeze the leftover buns, and when I make something that calls for bread crumbs I take out the buns ahead of time, thaw and chop in minifood grinder. I never buy prepared bread crumbs.

I have a recipe on this site called Beef Noodle Soup, it's made with all of my leftover steak or beef, even cut up leftover roast is good.

It's so cheap and the soup is a total hit everywhere we bring it. Snowmobiling trips, camping. Up north we need to keep warm from November to May. This soup will keep you warm, healthy and happy!

I sit down Sunday morning; clip coupons. Get on kraft.com look for some different dinner ideas. Write down a menu for 2 weeks. Look in my pantry and see what I need to complete the meals. What I dont have I write down what I need on a list. When I go shopping, I try ( real hard) to stick with my list. I save so much money and time. I really dont like to cook, but this website has helped me save a lot of money and impress my husband with home cooked meals. I feel like I do not waste food, because I can click the dinner tab and type in my meat, veg etc...We also use the leftovers for lunch the next day.
