write down the dates for the next two weeks or whatever and pick a dinner meal for all those days, then make your shopping list to what you will need fro those dinners.for example: Mon-Chicken parm Tues-pork chops with stuffing. Then you know what ingredients to shop for, Makes life a whole lot easier, actually i'm not sure I would know what to shop for if I didn't have a menu. Good Luck!

we also do a menu system, Every Two weeks after dinner my husband, and I ask the three children what they want to eat in the next two weeks for dinner, we write the menu and post it on the fridge, so everyone knows what dinner will be. It makes it easier to shop and theres never fighting over whats for dinner because it's posted two weeks in advance.

I have been using a menu for a little over 4 years now. I sit down and make my menu out for the whole month and then shop for a whole month. In the beginning, it was a little tough to come up with that many meals but it is pretty easy now. It has saved me tons of money by only making one trip a month to the grocery store and has saved me a lot of time trying to figure out what to have for dinner.

I've heard of menu calendars and though I'm type A don't really do them. But what I thought was sort of curious was the idea of merging the calendar with what's on sale and I usually do this when I arrive at the store somewhat unintentionally.
If I was to plan a calendar from home, I was curious if I could easily find the items on sale at the grocer remotely. After a little research, here's what I've learned:
SAFEWAY: Yes, via http://www.safeway.com/IFL/Grocery/Weekly-Specials
WHOLEFOODS: Yes, via what's on sale flyer after locating your store, plus some stores have their own twitter feeds.
BERKELEY BOWL: No!
TRADER JOE'S: No!
ANDRONICO'S: Yes, http://www.andronicos.com/ad/
DRAEGER'S: No!, but they do have some deals on their twitter feed http://twitter.com/draegersmarket
NEW LEAF: Yes, http://www.newleaf.com/common/specials/store_specials.asp?storeID=J3QSSEQX5CS92J2000AKHMCCQJA05T39
NUGGET: Yes, currently on special download http://www.nuggetmarket.com/

Welcome to the Kraftfoods community, duvya01. What a great idea. I have a lot of cookbooks, but I find I really only use three or four regularly, plus what I find on the internet. Maybe this will become my summer project. Thanks.

I also menu plan one week ahead so it makes going to the grocery store and fruit market a breeze. And with couponing and matching up the food sales with my menu, it's kinda fun seeing the savings total on my reciept at the end of my trip! I take the kraft magazine and all other cookbook pages and either rip out the ones we like or photocopy them. Once I have the page I create my own cookbook out of them. (We realized a big book or magazine was intimidating to us, so we had to break it down for us to actually try new things!) We have so many recipe pages now that I've divided them into 2 cookbooks. 1 for the winter w/ yummy chilis and stews and casseroles and the other for summer like light veggie pasta salads and sandwiches and grilling options. That's what has worked for us!

Welcome to the Kraftfoods community, 1jlmarley. I like the idea of letting your husband and son find foods that interest them. I find one of the biggest challenges is thinking about it all -- planning, shopping and cooking -- especially when I'm tired. Great suggestion!

I have been making a monthly menu for a few years now. When we started, our grocery budget was only $200 a month. I have since gotten a "raise", but I still do my menu. I have found, when I run out of ideas, that getting out my cookbooks that have pics in them and giving them to my husband and son to mark the things they want to try, is a huge help. And, it lets us try new things. Just an idea!

Welcome to the community, akri! That's a great savings! I still have yet to find someone that can beat my sister - she can feed her family of five healthy and nutritious meals for about $50 a week if you don't count the soda her husband chugs at work on a daily basis lol.
I bet you can even pare that amount down more if you check out some of the threads on coupon ideas and other cost cutting tips. Just do a search using the grey search box just above to the right and you'll come up with a bunch of threads on the topics you're looking for! There are a ton of very imaginative and money-saavy folks here.

Every other Sat Morning, I pull up Kraft.com and check out different things to make for the next 2 weeks. I HATE to cook, but using this website, I have really started to enjoy it. I also save a ton now at the supermarket now. I spent $125.00 at the supermarket and fed my family of 3!! For 2 weeks!!!! II was shocked.I also make a little extra so me and my husband can take leftovers for work. That saves about $5.oo a day for each of us. I do agree making a menu, then check out what you already have, what you don't write it down on your shopping list. A shopping list is a must!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Try your best to only buy what you have written down. I am still happy about my last visit to the supermarket!

Welcome to the community, buggaboo69! Wow, 5 boys!!! I know my one runs me ragged. You must be superwoman lol.
Menu calendars are awesome. I got away from doing mine as far as sticking exactly to it, but I still do one before shopping day to help me plan what to buy.

That brings up a good question. Is this easier to do with only two people eating? With the kids back in school, and bringing home who-knows-what kind of cold it can change quickly around here.
