Hello Kraft Community, we are very excited to share some great news with you. As loyal Kraft Community members we have heard your desire to do more fun things in the community and we are happy to announce in January 2010 we will be making some changes so you can connect and share food ideas in more ways than ever!
We want to let you know we will not be transferring the existing discussions to the new enhanced message boards so if there are discussions that you would like to save please make sure to either print them or copy and paste into a document that you can save to your personal files.

I have to agree with, Anna. Even though I can and freeze, there are lots of times when a box of this or a jar of that is faster and cheaper. A lot depends, I think, on how many you are cooking for, plus how much time you can and want to spend.
Cooking shouldn't be a burden, it should be an adventure.

I actually do the opposite many times. For example, I find I can buy a pretty good jar of spaghetti sauce cheaper than I can buy the ingredients to make a tomato-based sauce from scratch. It might be different if I had canned tomatos from my garden, but I don't.
I've done the same as you with the cake mix. It's mostly flour and sugar and we all have that on hand. Or bisquick. I know bisquick isn't expensive, but isn't it pretty much flour and leavening?

Save Money with recipe alterations ... When a recipe calls for a packaged product, I use a from scratch recipe instead as a substitute. For example my recipe for "Gooey Butter Cake" calls for a yellow cake mix, for which I substitute the dry ingredients from a recipe that I have for a cake. I follow the rest of the recipe just as though I had used the cake mix. It tales sightly longer to prepare, but the savings is worth it, and it turns out just as gooey, and deliciously scrumptious!
