Jen, I've never had a hot dog worth killing for. What kind do you eat?

When I was little- I used to insist that my dinner side was full but my dessert side was empty. I still feel that way sometimes- hehe.

My son loves hot dogs - we use a kosher brand of dog that's all beef, the lower fat version. I cook the dog, put it in a bun, wrap it first in a paper towel or napkin (to absorb any moisture that would make the bun soggy) and then wrap tightly in a double thickness of heavy duty foil. I put it in a separate compartment in his luch box away from the cold drink. It's hot and tasty when he eats it!

I think everyone is in agreement that hot dogs are not chicken or turkey... aka not exactly healthy for you. Debating the level of "un-healthiness" is basically arguing with opinions, in which there is never a winner, we all think we're right.
So let's focus on instead the topic of the thread, which is about hot dogs and kids' lunches...
When I was young, I took bologna or ham sandwiches to school slathered in mayo and, like many others, it sat in a closet, on a shelf, with other lunches, in an un-air-conditioned school room. I didn't have a single sick day until 6th grade when I caught a respiratory infection.
I do sometimes think that there's a lot of overkill and knee-jerk reaction when it comes to product safety (do we REALLY need warnings on hair dryers to not use them while in the shower?), but I do understand where it comes from - we all want to keep our children safe.
As for the questions on how to get the dogs out or what to do with the water, most schools have a water fountain in or near the cafeteria or barring that, a sink in the bathrooms. It could always be dumped in there, using the cap to block the dogs from coming out, then you just fish out the dogs when you get to your table.

>I didn't realize people in Thailand don't eat their hot dogs this way. I guess they just use ketchup like the rest of us.
Hot dogs aren't a hot ticket item in Thailand. It's pretty much an american thing. (Adapted from German sausages). Here's a pretty good synopsis of the history (we actually had to study this in school!) http://whatscookingamerica.net/History/HotDog/HDIndex.htm
As for being healthy... well- if you choose a low fat/low sodium version (there are some tasty ones out there), and serve it in moderation (no more than once a week) as part of a balanced diet (with whole grains, fruits, veggies, low fat dairy)- you won't be harm ing your children or family! But I would save the full fat/high sodium, really yummy versions for special occasions only (like those trips to the ball park!)

Anyone who eats a hot dog that way is nuts, IMO.

If a hot dog is involved it will never be a "healthy balanced meal." And that's becasue the hot dog is so bad for you to begin with. No amount of veggies make the meal healthy.
And the Thai dog doesn't even involve vegetables excapt some cucumber. It coats the hot dog in peanut butter! Other Kraft recipes coat hot dogs in sour cream and cream cheese. Could there be an unhealthier idea?

sandy is absolutely right. no matter what you serve the dogs with or what you add to the dogd. a dog is still a dog.
yes, you can add fresh veggies on the side, some whole grain bread all for nutrition values, and that is great. but the bottom lne is that a dog is still a dog... very yummy, but not too healthy...
back on topic, my mom put EVERYTHING in my thermos, from spaghetti, too chili, to dogs... and gave me $$ for a milk carton...that was 25 yrs ago, and i am still alive, healthy and kicking!!! whats a thermos for if you cannot keep something hot for a few hours???? thats what it was made for!!!
hugs!!!

There is nothing you can do to make hot dogs healthier. They are basically a junk food, full of bad stuff.
Everyone knows this.
You can serve them with vegetables but the hot dogs themselves are still unhealthy.
The "Thai Dog" you speak of doesn't expose anyone to other cultures, it exposes them to a hotdog coated in peanut butter and a huge amount of fat and sodium. It isn't the slightest bit Thai.
Here's the recipe.

There are ways to make dogs healthier. Kraft has many recipes on this site that have hot dogs topped with vegetables. I serve them frequently to my children for a healthy, balenced meal. They get their protein and their veggies! Also, when I make something like the Thai Dog, it exposes them to different cultures.

I'm with you, Miller. When I was a kid, tuna was my favorite lunch, wrapped in wax paper and left in my locker for at least four hours, in an unairconditioned school in the south. My theory, totally unscientific, is that our immune systems were tougher because they had more exposure to germs and less exposure to antibiotics.

I am so freaking out - listeria?? REALLY??? omg - my mom sent me with tuna salad, egg salad, thermoses of soup or chili, etc. these lunches sat in my backpack or locker for probably 4-6 hours before I ate them (unrefrigerated) and NEVER did I get sick once (actually, I have gotten food poisoning twice - both times at fairly high-end restaurants). Have we all gone nuts with food safety issues? I think we are the victims of T.M.I!
