My meme used to make a frosting that was cooked in a cast iron skillet, cooled in a sink of water then add in a stick of margarine. After it melted you would transfer the mixture to a metal bowl and beat with a wooden spoon until it was shiny. Literally about 30 minutes. Pour it over and it would kind of set up like a soft fudge. Not a hard shiny coat but soft and creamy but still hold it's shape. If this sounds like it I could look up recipes. My meme flavored these as chocolate, vanilla, caramel, butter rum and so on.

I've seen chocolate icings that harden, and fondant isn't exactly icing, but it is "harder" than icing. It doesn't exactly harden after it is put on the cake, though, it is always firm.
Could it be either of these?

The icing I put on a Texas sheet cake gets harder as it cools...reminds me of fudge that didn't set. Know what I mean? Let me know if you think that might be it. It's started on the stove.

Hi onmyknees, Do you remember anything else about it? Was it chocolate or some other flavor? Do you think it was made with powdered sugar or was it a cooked icing? Do you mean like the surface hardened or was it like hard candy? Lots of questions, but info would help . annaskf

I hope this is the correct way.
I remember coming up in MISS, My Mother and Grand made their icing for the cakes. It would harden on the cake once spreaded. DOES ANYONE KNOW ABOUT THIS TYPE OF ICING.
