Hi Eemma,
I too like Apple Crisp and as a chef I make it often and of all things serve it for a breakfast treat. Why not? It's loaded with breakfast foods. It's also a nice warm way to start off a cold winter day.
Granny Smith's, which originated in Australia, are the only apples I use in it. For those who would like to make an Apple Crisp from scratch and in record time try this:
NEW ENGLAND APPLE CRISP, Oven 350F
Prepare a 9" x 12' non stick sprayed baking dish; set aside.
In a bowl prepare your topping with: 1 Cup oats ( I often even use quick cooking oatmeal) 1/2 Cup A/P flour 1/3 Cup light brown sugar 1/4 cup (4 Tbs) unsalted butter Take a dough blender or two dinner knives and quickly blend all the ingredients until crumbly.
6-8 Granny Smith apples, peeled and quickly sliced off the apple cores with a paring knife into rough cut pieces. Don't get too fancy. Put into baking dish and spread evenly around.
1 - Orange, grate the orange zest over the top of the apples, as much as you want. I enjoy quite a bit and often use an entire orange.
Sprinkle your topping evenly over the apples and zest.
Bake uncovered 45 minutes until topping is bubbly, golden, and apples are tender.
Cool on a rack at least 10 minutes and serve with your suggested toppings.
Prep time 15-20 minutes. Bake time 45 minutes. Cooling time 10 minutes.
Tis Apple Season here in Maine and a great year it is.
Chef Bill

This is a recipe I posted on another thread. It has cranberries, but you could use just apples if you want. My sister makes this every Thanksgiving by request - sooo good! It's great with vanilla ice cream.
Apple-Cranberry Casserole 3 cups peeled, chopped apples 2 cups fresh cranberries 2 tablespoons flour 1 cup sugar 3 pkg. instant cinnamon & spice oatmeal 1/2 to 3/4 cup chopped pecans (optional) 1/2 cup flour 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted
Combine first 3 ingredients, tossing to coat. Add sugar, mixing well. Place in a 2 quart casserole. Combine next four ingredients. Add butter and mix well. Spoon over fruit mixture. (May be refrigerated at this point to cook later). Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Garnish with pecans and cranberries if desired. Serves 6-8.

I personally love Apple Crisp -- made with Granny Smith apples. (They are not as sweet and have a better texture for cooking than some varieties.) It is easy to make and wonderful with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream on it when it is still warm.
