Hi valarie, You have gotten some godd recipoes and ideals. I know this about 'bisquick" dumplins, "don't" use hot water or broth to make them with, it will cook up and you'll end up with chicken'n'gravy, . But it makes great dumplins. I add a little chicken boulion powder to the dry mix. Lots of luck, annaskf P.S. Dragonlady, what is " ribbon dumplins?"

I make drop dumplings with Bisquick. I use the recipe on the box, but then add garlic powder and black pepper. I simmer them in chicken broth, rosemary, sage and onion.

Here's the recipe I use. My family and boyfriend absolutely love it.
Ingredients:
5-6 cups of water 1-1 1/2 tbsp of chicken bullion (or to taste if you like it stronger use more) 1 1/2 cups of all purpose flour 1 egg 1 cup of milk 4 chicken breasts
Directions:
Cook chicken until tender. Add chicken bullion to water and bring to a boil. Mix flour, egg and milk together in a bowl. Make sure its thicker than pancake batter, Add as much flour as you need in order to thicken it up. Drop dumpling mixture into boiling water stirring occasionally. Shredd or chop up your chicken. Add to pot. Cook until dumplings are done. Depending on how thick you want your broth, you can cook it longer. Just make sure to stir is often so the dumplings wont stick to the bottom of the pan.

What do you do with the snowflakes?
I use a recipe very similar to shamdra's. It's really good and super easy!

> Can someone please help me with a tried and true > recipe for dumplings. I have never really made any, > and my husband really wants me to make it, any help > with this would be much appreciated. THANK YOU
here is my version 1 whole store-bought roast chicken (about 2 pounds) 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 container (7 ounces) chopped onions 6 cans (14 ounces) low-sodium chicken broth 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground pepper 1 container (14 ounces) pre-cut carrot sticks, chopped 1 container (14 ounces) pre-cut celery sticks, chopped 1 roll (16.3 ounces) golden buttermilk biscuit dough 1 can (10.5 ounces) condensed chicken gravy
Remove skin from chicken and shred meat into large pieces. Set aside. In a small frying pan, add vegetable oil and heat over medium heat. When oil is hot, add chopped onions and saute until soft.
In a large pot or Dutch oven, add broth, poultry seasoning, salt, pepper, carrots, celery, and sauteed onions. Bring to a boil. Reduce to simmer for about 10 minutes to soften vegetables, and then add shredded chicken. Continue to simmer while making dumplings.
While stew is simmering, prepare dumplings. Open can and remove biscuits. On a lightly floured surface, roll each biscuit to 1/4-inch thick. With a knife, cut each biscuit into 4 pie-pieces. Set aside.
Skim surface for any scum that has risen to top. Stir in chicken gravy.
With the stew still simmering over low heat, stir in dumplings a few at a time. Once all dumplings are in to pot, cover with a tight fitting lid and cook for 10 minutes.

Arty Rose, I use nearly the same receipe, except instead of hot water, I use some of the hot broth from the chicken pot. I love ribbon dumplings! My old aunt used to make them for the family in Indiana when I was a wee one. LOL

How involved do you want to get? I have been making chichen and dumplings for years but it involves rolling out the dough. They are wonderful, though. Put about 2 cups or less of self-rising flour in a bowl with a sprinkle of poultry seasoning. Pour in hot water while stiring so that you can make a good dough, Not too much, it doesn't need to be wet. With the hot water, the sr flour will act like it has yeast in it. Roll into a ball adding flour as needed. place on well floured cloth and roll out with a rolling pin or bottle until thin. cut with a sharp knife into strips.
the broth needs to be bubbling and slowly drop strips into the bubbling broth around the edges of the pot, carefull holding the dumplings back with the back of a large spoon.untill the desired amount is in the pot. you may have dough left over. allow broth to simmer for about 20 minutes or so, carefull pushing the dumplings down in to the broth ever so ofter. DONT STIR. Also don't put top on pot. it will boil too hard and tear up dumplings. My husband always wants them extra juicy, so I add an extra chicken bouillon or two to juice. Be sure to set tender chicken aside until the dumplings are done and then add back to the pot when ready to serve.
I know this sounds involved, but it isn't really and is really the only true southern dumpling.

Here are several dumpling recipes from Kraft. Just click on that link and it will take you to them. http://www.kraftfoods.com/main.aspx?s=recipe&m=recipe%2Fknet_recipe_grid&u1=keyword&u2=dumplings
Here are a couple of other just very plain ways to make just drop biscuits, which is what I make.
DUMPLINGS
2 c. flour 1 tsps. salt 4 tsp. baking powder 1 egg, beaten 2 tbsp. melted butter 2/3 c. milk Pinch of parsley flakes (optional)
To make dumplings, sift together flour, salt and baking powder. Combine egg, melted butter and milk and add to flour mixture, (add parsley if used) stirring quickly just until smooth. Drop by spoon evenly around over boiling soup. Cover tightly and simmer 18 minutes until done without peeking.
DUMPLINGS
1 c. flour 2 Tbsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 1 egg, beaten 1/2 c. milk
Sift flour with baking powder and salt. Mix egg with milk and add all at once. Stir only until mixed. Drop by spoonfuls over boiling mixture. Cover and steam 15 min. before removing lid. Snowflake
Good luck! You can do it, and they are good. I've even put a little jelly on a dumpling and love them that way as well.
