Sounds like this is what you were looking for and I am so glad for you! My family always serves this over white rice which is also very good but the bread, hard to beat. I agree, it's best if you top the bread with the gravy just before serving so there is still some texture. Glad you found an old family favorite!!!

I'm sorry it took so long to report the results of making the tomato gravy! It was so delicious! I added cubed bread to it and it was like 'mom used to make'. Although...I added it too soon and it started to 'melt' so in future, I'll keep the crust on and add it just before serving or just pour the gravy over the cubes. I look forward to making it again.

Thank you all! I copied the tomato gravy recipe recommended and will make the adjustments also recommended. I will post a result when I get it made. I had started trying to really concentrate on what I ate so many years ago...and it did finally occur to me that Mom must have thickened the base and then added the tomatoes and bread cubes. My sister also agreed that it must have been a milk base.
Again, thank you all!

I tried to think what that was also?:|. The recipe makes sence, just add sugar and then bread cubes when it's done. Lots of luck and let us know if you tried it and how it turned out. Sometimes recipes are hard to find beacuse the person may of started with one and then added to or changed it?!? annaskf

I agree with Val that this looks like it may be tomato gravy. My grandmother used to make it. Here is a set of instructions (although this is one of those recipes that everyone makes a bit differently): http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Tomato-Gravy

Why does this sound a little bit like tomato gravy???? My family always ate this over toasted white bread or white rice.

Welcome to the community washintoncook. =)

I poked around on google and didn't have any luck. Maybe one of the posters will know, and I'll flag it upwards to see if it rings any bells.

Help, need recipe

My mom used to make something with stewed tomatoes and bread in a somewhat thickened sweetened creamy sauce on the stovetop. We absolutely loved it. I never made it and now mom is gone. Why didn't I ask about it!
Anyway, I think it is similar to tomato pudding but it wasn't baked. Was it a good ol' Southern recipe she had or did she make it up? Anyone know what I am referring to??? Anyone have a recipe???
Thanks!
