Lettuce rolls are most often made using boston bibb.

I love all kinds of lettuces, but for making a lettuce roll up, iceberg is probably your best bet for the outside part, although you might also try some red romaine, the leaves are broad and fairly sturdy. Iceberg is almost indestructible but has little nutritional value except for fiber, but it works great for these.

I really love fresh spring rolls that are made with sprouts, tofu, other veggies and wrapped in a rice wrapper. Basically a spring roll without frying.

Yeah, you have to read the nutrition info on packages... I use Flour Tortilla shells for my wraps -- not the "real" wrap breads. The package of tortilla shells I have on hand are an 8 inch flour tortilla with 20 g. total carbs and 160 calories each and 2 g. fiber. The [Double Fiber] bread I have on hand is 20 g. total carbs and 90 calories and 6 g. fiber each slice. [I don't currently have any of my husband's favorite [white] bread on hand to check what the nutrition info is on that...] I use two slices of bread for a sandwich but only one tortilla shell to make my wraps. (No wimpy "open faced" sandwiches for me!) So, for me, it is usually is a better nutrition choice for me to use the tortilla shell instead of making a sandwich. It also depends on what I put into the wrap/sandwich! ]:)

Hi 61sugarbear59, i love trying new lettuce, I often buy the "spring mix". but also prefer tha ice berg because of the "crunch" on the sandwich,:). I was intrigued by this statement, "They have fewer carbs than breads ". That may be true?!?, but some have a 'lot" more calories. The size dose make a big difference!. I was buying some that were about 8-10 ins. and thinking I was doing good because they were made with vegetables added, they were 550 calories each!!!:O

Cutting back on total carbohydrate (particularly those refined types) for most Americans is a good idea. Just be sure that you're getting your "recommended amount" each day. As far as using tortillas or other wraps instead of bread- it can be a great idea, but definitely read your labels. A typical slice of bread is 15 grams of carbs, where as some wraps contain up to 60 grams each. (though a small 6 inch wrap should be comparable to a slice of bread).
As far at the different types of lettuce.. the biggest differences are taste and texture. Experiment to see which ones you prefer the most. As far as "healthiness" the more colorful and flavorful, the better for you. So iceberg lettuce has very little nutrition, while spinach or watercress contains quite a bit.

Eemma had a great site, and I agree with her comments. It all depends on what I'm using it for, but for the most part I like ice berg, it's got the crunch I enjoy.

As long as you vary the different lettuces and greens you use you are going to be better off. In general nutrition is also affected by how long it has been since it was harvested as well as how it was (and is) stored. I also like to use wraps or soft tortillas for sandwiches. They have fewer carbs than breads and make a "neater" sandwich for transporting than lettuce.

:O i had no idea how many varieties of lettuce there are until i was diagnosed w/ diabetes and started cutting out breads & using lettuce for sandwiches. i was told this was a great move on my part. i've used ice berg lettuce for so long i thought it was the only one out there until i actually started paying attention. i had no idea that there were so many varieties out there.
here's my delima: my friends/family say that certain types are good for this other are good for that... this kind has more of this that kind has more of that ect ect. i like romaine, ice berg, boston (bib). can you tell me what is the differences - if there are any - in the types of lettuce. i have to say tho the head of lettuce last longer than the bag does.... at least in my fridge.
any advice/ideas will be greatly appreciated, thanks :)
