Slowly put the egg in small tip first. This allows the egg to expand into the air pocket that forms in the large end.

If you leave the eggs out for a bit before cooking it helps. Placing a cold egg in boiling water is a shock and causes the egg to crack. (That's how I was taught it anyway.)

When I googled I found this: First of all, the temperature of the egg before it goes in the pan to be cooked is important. Really, the egg should be cooked at room temperature, otherwise when you place it into the pan of boiling water, it will most likely crack from the pressure.

I add a ton of salt too. Something about making them easier to peel. Then IF I remember....I let the water cool down and water the house plants. Seems to perk them up especially in the winter. Come on Spring

I've never put mine in a bowl of hot water while waiting for the cooking water to boil but that's not a bad idea. What I do ALWAYS do however, is add a ton of salt to the boiling water before sliding the eggs in. You'd have to ask Alton Brown why that works, I just know it does. Well, at least for me.

I always put my eggs in a bowl of hot water while I wait for the cooking water to boil, then gently ease them into the boiling water with a spoon. Let them cook for about 3 minutes and transfer them to a bowl of cool water to stop cooking. Hope this helps!

Hi, can anyone please tell me how to best make soft-boiled eggs without the shells cracking? Thank you for your time.
