'slow cookers' and ' crock pots' ARE THE SAME THING...like chef b says, one has a 'tm' it really depends on the strength , or size, of your cooker...i always say, "DONT LIFT THE LID!!!" but in recent experience, thats not always true. as long as you have some sort of liquid in the pot, and stir (to re-distribute), you will be ok. especially with chicken... just make sure that you give a quick stir to redistribute liquids and recover immediately..
its different with every pot and size...thats my opinion, never had a problem, lately....and i am sticking to it...

Lots of good ideas here! Not that it is all that important, but the word "CrockPot" is a registerd trade mark owned and used by Rival. They call their "CrockPot" a stoneware slow cooker, so they are one and the same.
I use mine frequently and would not be without it for beef stews, chicken recipes (especially thighs and legs), country ribs, and pork chops.
Enjoy your CrockPot/slow cooker. My smallest, a 2 1/2 quart size only uses 180 watts of electricity which is much more inexpensive than an oven baking for hours plus it gives you peace of mind to let it cook while you are away.

Perfect answer, St. B! Exactly what I needed to know! Thank you!

Also, thanks for the tip Buck, about this site's slow cooker recipes. I'm sure I'll browse through them once I'm more comfortable using my crock pot! =)

Yes, slow cookers and crock pots are the same thing (think tissue vs. kleenex). One is just a brand name used as a generic term.

Some recipes do not call to brown the meat first, due to simplicity (and the fact that many slow cookers do not have a stove-top safe insert- so it would require a different pan- something many people want to avoid when using a slow cooker).
The nice thing about slow cookers is that the timing is not very significant, especially when used on the low setting. Even a difference in an hour or two doesn't make a huge change in the end product.
Browning you meat first, will create a better end product as far as texture/color of the meat goes. Cooking time will be the same, though.

Slow Cooker v. Crock Pot

Posted: Feb 23, 2009 12:52 PM
When I'm at work or school all day, I usually don't feel like cooking a meal when I get home. Not to mention my husband has classes until about 8 or 9 almost every night, so we usually fend for ourselves. I've always read the threads of people swearing by their crock pot or slow cooker. The idea of walking into the door to a home-cooked meal is just too appealing!

Truth be told, I have never used a crock pot/slow cooker...with the exception of a beef stew DISASTER! My husband bought me a magazine that has loads of recipes for "slow cookers," no mention of crock pots anywhere. I really want to make a pot roast tomorrow, but I only have a crock pot (which was a wedding present...and still sits there virtually untouched!). Are slow cookers and crock pots pretty much the same thing?

Also, the recipe doesn't say to brown the roast first, just to add to the soup mix and vegetables...I want to brown it first, will that have any effect on the cooking time? Thanks!
