As a child we never took a road trip without Fig Newtons, and even today I can't imagine taking a big trip without them. I don't mind fresh fruit, but it has to be something easy, that doesn't need to be peeled, so it doesn't make a lot of trash. Peaches and plums work. Peanut butter crackers do well, and kids really seem to like them. The idea of celery and carrots is also a great one. Have fun on your trip!

Popcorn is always a great option too. Unflavored, unsalted is healthy for you, but if you like yours with a little more ooph, you can season them with anything from the powdered butter you get specifically for that, to crushed red pepper flakes or ground peppers, to cinnamon, to Kraft Grated Parmesan cheese!

Bill's ideas are great. There are lots of convenience foods now for snack that are premeasured for portion control which can be an issue when you are traveling with a huge bag of chips. With a little pre-planning it's easy to make your own.
When we are traveling by car, I like to make up a box of different sandwiches like turkey, ham or roast beef (with or without cheese), cut them in half or quarters and wrap them and store in a shoe box sized plastic container that is water proof and can sit on top of the ice in the ice chest. Lettuce always seems to wilt, but it travels ok in a separate baggie to be added prior to eating.
For me, I include a quart jar of coffee for making iced coffee along the way and a quart jar of tea. I include a zip lock bag of ice just for drinks and everyone has their own travel mug as well as their own refillable water bottle.
Fresh fruit always seems to be pretty messy to me, but like others have said, taking your favorite dried fruits and nuts and making trail mix is great.

Hi khogan43,
First of all Welcome to the Boards! Your question is a very good one.
When I was young we did not have all the prepackaged travel snacks one can find now. We made our own; now days that can save you big money.
One thing I always enjoyed munching on was plain toast squares. Get a Pullman sandwich loaf of bread, that's the square type bread, toast a few slices and cut into one inch squares, bag in a Ziplock type bag. See cheese suggestion below.
Baby carrots, or homemade carrot sticks are good, so is peanut butter suffed celery; be sure to de-string the celery. Add other type veggies the family likes to your list. Make your own dip or take along a separate container of salad dressing. I make a veggie dip using 1 cup of mayo and 1/2 to 3/4 tsp curry powder, 1/4 tsp cumin and mix well. Keep cool in an insulated cup or small ice chest.
Dried fruits are always good to have. Instead of buying those small individual packs of fruit, buy the larger size, mix them for variety, and put in Ziplock bags. Think about bagging assorted nuts also.
Kraft cheeses in a jar are also good to have. Just bring along some assorted crackers and don't forget a couple of plastic knives. You can also put the cheese on the toast squares.
Meat sticks are also good to have. Beef Jerkey? - depends on your likes and dislikes.
If you need to refrigerate somethings, get one of those small insulated cases or ice chests and those sealed ice blocks. They are perfect for small travel snacks.
Drinks? Take plenty of bottled water.
And don't forget a roll of paper towels.
Have a pleasant journey!
Chef Bill

I have two small boys and this is what I pack when we go on vacation: Nuts: peanuts, almonds, walnuts, cashews. Trail Mix: I mix peanuts, cashews, and dried fruit such as cranberries and pineapples, apricots. etc. Fruit: I buy the little crunch paks of apples and grapes mix at Wal-Mart or Kroger, however I would keep them cool. Also yogurt covered raisin and cranberries, cheese or peanut butter crackers, and lowfat granola bars.
