Yes, packaged foods are high in sodium- and they are also not very budget friendly when you come right down to it, so avoiding them is the best option. Do as much as you can from scratch and just avoid adding salt whenever possible. (ie- buy dried beans and rice instead of canned or instant to save money and sodium). Pasta and homemade spaghetti sauce (use no-salt added canned tomatoes- or fresh when in season, to make your sauce). Make sure the meat/poultry you choose is in it's natural state and not treated with a salt or "flavor" solution. Look for sales of healthy low-salt products (read your food labels!) and stock up when you are able. Many natural products freeze very nicely. But be aware of where sodium can hide- like in many packaged cold cereals (choose natural oatmeal instead- cheaper, too). and cheese.

Homemade soups are budget friendly and you can control the sodium you put in. You can make your own stocks by boiling meats and veggies or you can use low sodium broths to assist you. They also freeze well so you can make a big batch and save some for later.

Low salt diets

My husband suffers congestive heart failure. We live on a fixed income so I need low cost meal that are low in sodium. Most packaged foods are relatively high in sodium so it is difficult to adapt some of the recipes that call for prepackaged ingredients. Any suggestions?
