Or water with a small bit of lemon juice and tubinado sugar (if you're trying to keep white products - sugar, flour, rice - out of your diet).

Diet things make you hungrier and gain weight. I would drink water flavored with some Tang.

I would always recommend water before any other beverage, and to limit your consumption of diet drinks. With that said, having one regular soda a day with dinner is probably worse for you then one or two diet drinks a day. I think there is much more evidence that points to regular soda being associated with higher risks of obesity and chronic disease than diet sodas.

I was always under the impression, when I first heard of that "theory" that it was a mental thing, because folks think "Oh, I'm having diet drinks, so that means I can eat more goodies." But when I actually saw the studies showing the tests with rats... well, you have to admit, they don't exactly think "You know, Fluffy, if I drink this diet stuff they're giving me, I can eat more oat pellets!" So there's certainly something to the actual way the chemical reacts with your brain and that was enough to make my curb my desire for diet sodas down.

And I have to admit, since stopping the diet drinks, after having been on a plateau for a while, I've started losing weight again.

Definitely go for water if you can stomach it. It's nature's perfect beverage, after all. ;)

You are aware of the link between artificially sweetened beverages and obesity, aren't you?

I am afraid that your beverage choices might undermine your weight loss goals.

Well said Brandislee. I agree nothing hydrates you better than water.

Aside from artificial sweeteners being linked to obesity, I also have to point out that tea doesn't hydrate as well as water, and being well hydrated is key to loosing weight or maintaining a healthy weight. And personally, I just don't buy the "I don't like water" arguement. It doesn't have any flavor. So you may not love it, but it's not like someone is forcing you to drink sludge or something. As my husband would say (lovingly, of course) "man up."

It helps sometimes to change the mindset a little. I hate the taste of artificial sweetener (lucky me, I know), and I refuse to waste perfectly good calories, of which I can only consume so many in a day, on a beverage. I do occasionally drink a coke, but it's a treat, and I enjoy it that much more when I do drink it.

I actually have heard of both of these and it's why I went from all drinks being diet ones and using Splenda for everything, down to drinking water all day, a regular soda with dinner, and the one packet of Splenda when I just want something a little sweeter than water, but not a soda.. I get a sweeter flavor from one packet of Splenda than with one packet of sugar, which is why I still use it from time to time.

If you don't like water, also try to switch to bottled, or put your tap water in the fridge overnight. A lot of complaints about water that I've personally heard come down to the flavor and that is dependent on your area's chlorine/chemical treatment of the water. Putting it in the fridge turns the chlorine/chemical taste WAY down, making it taste fresher and much better.

I don't like water. I've tried several ways to make myself drink more and what I've found that works best for me is to keep an 8 oz glass next to the sink at all times and when I'm in the kitchen I fill it up and chug it down. That way I get it all in w/o setting the glass down and forgetting about it.

water is always your best option - maybe she could try drinking a glass of water with fruit like sliced lemons or oranges or cut up strawberries.

I have to agree with Doc on this one. I just find the concerns about artificial sweeteners enough of an issue to try and remove them from my diet.

I do like green tea, which can be beneficial and has less caffeine than black coffee. Slices of lemon, lime or orange in water gives water an extra kick, too.

There are very well-established links between artificially-sweetened drinks and both obesity and diabetes.

Should that interest you. And it should.

The rats given artificially sweetened drinks were found to consume three times more calories than rats that didn't receive any sweeteners in their drinks

Heavy consumption of artificially sweetened beverages was associated with almost twice the risk of diabetes in a long-term, community-based prospective study, researchers reported here at the American Diabetes Association annual meeting.

I love water - but even I can sometimes find it tedious to get as much water in me in a day as I should. Two tricks I used to keep drinking water and not resort to caffeinated beverages: one packet of Splenda and a dash of lemon juice for a little flavor or buying the flavored sport waters.

Another thing is ice. I'm an ice fanatic - even down to the size and shape of the cubes (I will eat any ice, but prefer the small, pencil eraser-sized ice). If I'm just wanting to munch on something, but know I shouldn't be grabbing a bag of chips, I'll get a huge cup of ice and just chew on that for a while - urge to snack and water quota filled in one easy step!
