Check out the Therpeutic Lifestyle Change Diet, on the National Institutes of Heart Lung Blood website www.nihlb.nih.gov look at 'Atherosclerosis" and then read through until you see the diet, it's called TLC for short. A little difficult to find but well worth it to learn a lot about food and fats. We started this diet and quite simply eliminated saturated fat by cutting out butter and using a sub, eliminating red meat and dark poultry, more grains like rice and more veggies. Never hungry. Did not cut our modest alcohol consumption. Husband lost 15 pounds easily in 3 months and I lost 10 because I still cheat a little.
Yes, as with such great eating plans like Weight Watchers, it is a lifestyle change and it was easy for us.

I LOVE smoothies. lovelovelove If you get frozen fruit, you can put that in a blender in the morning, add some apple juice, add some Splenda if you want it a little sweeter still, blend and enjoy!

Thanks so much everyone! You mentioned healthy breakfasts-I am not much of a breakfast eater-any ideas for smoothies or shakes?

I went to the real thing. The problem with a boot camp, real or commercial, is that folks are pushed so hard while they're doing it, when it's over, a majority of people want to just take it easy, gorge on fast food, and generally ruin all the work they put into it.

It takes a certain kind of person with a certain kind of mindset to make it work after a boot camp. You have to know you want a lifestyle change, you have to be TOTALLY committed to the change, and you have to just be using the boot camp as a "detox" or jumping off point to get you to a strong start.

On the other hand, I would love to go to a boot camp. Mainly so someone else organizes my time and meals, removes temptation and makes me do it. :)

You're exactly right. That is the best thing to keep in mind when losing weight. It's a lifestyle change. You have to adapt to a new way of eating and exercising to improve your health and your waistline. That's why its the healthiest to loose weight at a rate of 2-3 pounds per week, because its the gradual and PERMANENT changes that you're making. You're not crash dieting or signing up for boot camp. The minute you stop extremely rigorous diets and/or exercise regimens the weight will slowly creep back on. Make your changes right for you, and you'll benefit.

And they're definently right.. Calories in should equal less than calories out. Figure out how that best works for you and run with it.

Weight Watchers is an amazing resource. If you don't need the face-to-face support, they have an online program and Kraftfoods.com also has a Meal and Fitness planner.

I agree with lil_deb75. I am a member of weightwatchers now for a year and I have lost 14.4lbs. It has been a struggle but I am getting. Try increasing more fruits and vegetables into your meals and drinks lots of water or low calorie drinks. You also have to move more. One of the benefits of being a weightwatchers member is that you have a support group. People who praise your achievements and your failures. Journalling is a great help also.

Oh, I thought of one more tip, probably one of the most important ones...

Don't lose hope.

Anyone trying to eat better and lose weight will have a time (or two) when they don't meet the goal they hoped for, or over-indulge, or even gain a couple of pounds. Don't let that discourage you -- just get back on that horse when you fall off and keep on riding!

I just had a baby and thank god for breast feeding. I gained about 30 pounds. I have lost most of it in just 2 months. Honestly what is working for me is exercise and watching what you eat. Also eatting breakfeast, making time to pack a heathy lunch and snakes. Never eat past 7pm.

I would join Weight watchers. I am a lifetime member. It is not a diet. It teach you how to eat the right foods. Also the the meetings are wonderful because there are persons there like you. . You can go online www.weightwatchers.com for information. I try diet myself and it didn' t help.

> Eat less, move more. Period.

There has been a recent study published in one of the major medical journals that followed subjects as they dieted with the major types -- low carb, low fat, etc. What they found is that you are right. Over time, all diets work about the same. It comes down to what you put in and what you use up.

Re: Weight Loss

this is how i did it. i have lost a total of 19 lbs since jan 1st...

i didnt change what i ate, i just changed how i prepared my meals... i went from whole milk and cheeses to 1% milk and ff or part skim cheese. the same went for the rest of my dairy products. if you can stand skim milk, go for it... i didnt..:|

i cut out red meat and pork and started eating alot more fish, ground turkey, chicken.

nothing but whole grain breads, crackers cereal...

i incorporated fresh or frozen fruits and veggies. i stayed away from canned..(alot more sugars and sodium...)

for snacks, i have grapes, cut up strawberries, blueberries, ff pudding, sugar free jello...

TONS OF WATER.. and take your vitamins...

for excersise, i do 80 crunches a day.( i know it seems hard, but after a week, i got used to it)...i only started out with 30, then built up from there. i also do a cardio tape 2-3 times a week. and walk every day..

this worked for me...i promise... i didnt follow a specific diet, nor did i take any diet supplements like alli or that. if you do want to use a supplement, i would reccommend that you talk to your doc first...some of those can be dangerous...

another thing i did was treat myself for every 5 pounds i lost...like a pedi, a new book. when i hit my goal, i went and got a massage...:-x it was worth it!!!

i still spoil myself a bit here and there, and there is nothing wrong with it. i had a big juicy burger the other day... yummy!! but went right back to my routine for dinner that night and still did my crunches...;)

good luck, have fun with it and keep us updated on your progress!!! :)
