I think at some point Culleen mentioned having issues with a vegetarian child. You should ask her about it.

>the pasta and breads have really built up and he has gained a lot of weight. He needs more protein and hardly eats veggies either... I dont know.....the pediatrician says it is a mind game and he is winning, which I know. Help Anyone???
First off, let me say, this is a common problem with children. The children's hospital in Philly has a whole team dedicated to children with texture issues. Your best bet would be to meet with a registered dietitian who specializes in child nutrition (find one at www.eatright.org). Some insurances are covering the visits. As for his overall nutrition- he can have a perfectly healthy diet w/o eating meat. Grains/starches contain up to as much protein as a piece of fish. (Choose the whole grain varieties). If he is eating yogurt, cheese and milk- that is a great start as well. Tofu, suprisingly, is often well tolerated by children who don't enjoy meat as it is an entirely different texture. Try it marinated and stirfried (the firm type), or puree the silken into a fruit smoothy or soup. Other veggies (and even beans), can be pureed as well and added to sauces (like spaghetti sauce), soups, etc.. without notice. At his age, it is going to be important that he have control over what he is eating. There are various ways of achieving this, such as having him help with meal prep of foods he is uncertain about; or having him choose one new food to try each week (take him grocery shopping and have him choose). As for weight control- he needs to have responsibility for that as well. Making foods and snacks off limits, generally backfires. Instead talk about portion control, healthy choices, and increase activity as a family. www.mypyramid.gov, http://www.fruitsandveggiesmorematters.org/ http://www.kidshealth.org/parent/nutrition_fit/center/nutrition_center.html http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/pubs/bibs/gen/childlit.html (The Science in the Kitchen cookbook is great for that age group, as it is "experiments" that you can do to get kids interested in food) http://www.smartpicks.com/ (games to play online) All these sites contain some great information. Good Luck!

Hi Lottie, well you would think hot dogs would be one of the easiest things to get a child to eat, and he wont even try it, says it looks disgusting....no matter how we prepare it.....This has been an ongoing problem for years

What about other sources of protein such as low-fat dairy products? Whole grains mixed with beans will make a complete protein as well.

Good Morning, this is my first time writing. I am hopeing someone has a successful idea on how to get an 11 year old to eat meat. That is without fussing crying, throwing up, gagging etc. I know it is my fault he is this way because when he was little and first tried meat, the gagging started and I let him go without eating it. Well the pasta and breads have really built up and he has gained alot of weight. He needs more protien and hardly eats veggies either... We have taken all snacks away and he only gets breakfast and lunch.....I was just hopeing for a way to disguise the meat maybe??? I dont know.....the pediatrician says it is a mind game and he is winning, which I know. Help Anyone???
