I found out yesterday that they will permit children to bring leftovers that need to be heated up or the food can be left out of the fridge. It's just their preference to have everything refrigerated for organization's sake. My little guy may be getting leftovers after all.... he really loves his "spicy rice", after all (cajun dirty rice).

My boys love to make mini pizza's the morning of or the night before out of leftover hot dog or hamburger buns, a little sauce and some cheese! If we have leftover meatballs from spaghetti they will make a meatball sub out of hot dog buns too! They can heat the meatballs up and put them in an insulated thermos and then assemble at school!

Use a thermos (the bowl kind) and pack leftovers from the night before. You can even put chicken nuggets in it. Try putting taco meat in the thermos and then pack a tortilla and shredded cheese. Put a hamburger patty in it and then pack the bread and other stuff for it. I cook a lot of casseroles so the leftovers make a great lunch the next day.

My teen daughter will take different kinds of cereal as a 'chex mix' sort of snack. Always a good fail safe!

Sunflower butter does taste very good, but I found it is costley, usually $6. In north FL I can only find it at Target. I buy Soy butter & that's about $3.

My son also just started kingergarten. Some things he loves is: Roll up salami & use small pretzel sticks to secure Take sliced turkey & place a thin slice of cheese inside then roll up. I also use a round TBSP sized measuring spoon to cut bologna & thick chicken or turkey, add ritz crackers & cheese. He has his own lunchables.
I usually make PB&J every other day & cut it into 4 triangles or squares or use a large cookie cutter for something different.
Did purchase a thermos at WalMart for $3 & will put leftovers in it.

the answer to this is sunflower butter. Trader Joes or you can find in the organic section of large chain grocery stores like A&P. My daughter loves it and the school even uses it in the cafeteria since our town schools have outlawed nut butters too..

I used to pack lunches for two boys every day. I made small pancakes and froze then the ate them plain but dipping would be good. The also took cold cereal and bought milk at school. I knew it was something they would eat and would fill them up until I picked them up. Grapes, bananas (they come in their own wrapper even when you cut it in half).
Crackers and cheese slices any kind they like, apples and cheese slices, and apples and peanut butter for dip.
All good you will catch on to what they like and which leftovers will really get eaten. Best wishes

My kids LOVE pancakes and they LOVE peanut butter & jelly as most kids.. So, I make a BIG batch of oatmeal cookie pancakes.. I use Bisquick and instead of using oil- I use a ripe banana or applesauce it sweetens the pancake so you don't need syrup... Then I make up some Quaker Oats instant oatmeal- any flavor.. .Apple cinnamon is good or Maple brown sugar... Add it to the Bisquick and make pancakes... My kids LOVE them and the leftovers can be made into pb & j sandwhiches... ! Or frozen for later use.. I do this with waffles too...
I also make "pockets" out of grands bisquits.. I fill them with taco meat, sloppy joe or tuna melt and stretch the grands into rounds- fill seal with a fork and brush w/ egg.. Bake.. These go GREAT with soup/salad or just raw veggies. & dip...
roll-ups are good or hummus and raw veggies and pita chips.. ! You can use different veggies and spices to jazz up the hummus which is just ground up chick peas, garlic, olive oil and tahini available at most grocery stores in the ethnic aisle but, I omit it and it was still good... You can add roast peppers, garlic, tomato paste... YUM ! Good source of protein....

I don't remember what leftovers are anymore. My son eats everything. He's my human garbage disposal!

Ok....this might be obvious to most here but if you use an ice pack with the kiddos' lunches and send a sandwich, do not place them next to one another or the bread turns into a soggy mess......I didn't realize this for a couple years after oldest started school....she never mentioned it but then again, she likes things soggy or stale(ie, crackers, cookies).....YUCK to me but yum for her.

My son's first week was a hit at school. Having him help choose what he wanted for lunch, as was mentioned below, worked very well. They keep all of the kids' lunches in the fridge, though, so I'm a bit limited on the leftovers idea, unfortunately. On a good note, if I make him a sandwich with mayo or have some other product that is best to keep cold, I know it will still be good for him come lunchtime.

The Thermos brand of products are awesome and really work well! I have the thermos and put ice water at the beginning of the day which starts at 7 am and there will still be ice in there when I clean it out in the evening. There thermos are awesome. We live in southern Arizona so we have to always have water with us and my family of 5 all have our own thermos like this. YOu can find them at target, and wal-mart and run from 13 to 16$. They are worth the splurge bc they work better than any other product I have found. They have a flip out straw and my 2 year old likes to push the little button to watch it flip open and reveal the straw. Since I like the thermos for the cold drinks so much I bought the same brand of the thermos canister for boyardee ravioli or the other kinds of pasta. She really liked the alphabet one. Someone mentioned putting boiling water or hot water to preheat it, I may try that too. I ate lunch with her recently and tried her ravioli and it was still warm. Also, I use cold packs in her lunch when I send cold cuts or sandwiches with her. Hope this helps.
