I see a lot of use of rice krispie treats in making cool cakes--and why not? Its totally moldable. I made giant foil-wrapped kisses out of it for the kids Valentine's Day party at school a couple of years ago, and this year for April fools I made "sushi"--gummy worms rolled up in the cereal mix, then sliced into 1" thick slices and wrapped with strips of fruit roll ups. Its was a big hit!

I used "rice cereal" marshmallow treat mixture to mold my volcano and placed it on top of a sheet cake, covered the treat with icing and cookie crumbs. No baking and no fear of collaspe.

If you're interested, the cake turned out fine--I definitely winged it on baking the cakes themselves though!

I used 2 cake mixes and just sort of eyed things up. I probably made them bigger than they needed to be, but I fit about 3/4 of one cake mix in the 4 qt bowl and probably 1/2 of the other mix for the 2 qt bowl. I baked the larger one for almost an hour and the second for probably 40 minutes, until toothpicks came out clean. I had to do some serious carving of the cakes to get them to look like a mountain--thank heaven for frosting!!

With the addition of crushed oreos for gravel around the bottom and the hardened red candy syrup and cool whip to mimic the "explosion", it turned out better than I expected. The boys that were invited to the party loved it, so that was all that mattered to me!! Too bad I can't post a picture...

Thanks for the help!

;)

Hope all went well with your cake!
When ever you cut down the the size of the cake- you should reduce the timing, the temperature can usually stay the same.

For anyone else looking to having a Volcano Themed Birthday Party find out how to make an exploding volcano.

Great idea for a kid's birthday!

I pictured someone having a cake exploding...

Anyway, I'm probably too late, but I think I found the recipe on google you were using. I'd say scoop out enough for the cupcake and then split the rest of the box mix between the bowls by eyeing it. It didn't give good directions on that part. You're 4 quart will need twice as much. (This is sounding like a horrid math problem.) Cooking wise I'd start checking it within 20 minutes and go by the toothpick method.

Let us know what you ended up doing, and how it turned out.

volcano cake help!!

My son turns 10 tomorrow and I'm making him a volcano cake. The directions call for one dome cake baked in a 4 qt bowl and one dome cake baked in a 2qt bowl. I have no idea how much cake mix to use for each bowl and if I should follow the directions for baking time and temp or if I should alter them.

Help!
