Phatmama:

Any guess on calorie count or ideas to make it more healthy? I have kids.

Thanks

I have a very picky boyfriend and his son -10 yrs- I cook for. Of course if dad doesn't like it neither will his son so I have told him several times if he doesn't like something fine, don't say anything about it and eat it that time and then tell me about it. We have compromised and what I do is I make sure he eats the same as us but the vegs he doesn't like I put less of on his plate. In the last 2 yrs I have noticed that he likes the things he didn't used to like because I cook them different.

Ellamarie03, welcome to the Message Boards!

Does your son like cheese? I had a period of making all my kids veggies with a cheese sauce to get them to eat them. My grandson has a thing for ranch dressing. He loves anything with either cheese or ranch on them!. If your son drinks juice he is getting most of the nutrients of fruit without eating the fruit itself.

I know your son is young, but having him help with the meals seems to work to get them to try new things. A three he can help by dumping the ingredients in for recipes. Looking at cookbooks with pictures of the recipes might help, too.

Good luck. He will probably start eating more things as long as you keep trying.

My son is going on 3 in march and he only eats a few things. He is a very picky eater. He loves his corn dogs and mc Donald chicken nuggets when we are out. Pizza he use to eat all the time but that is very rare. Potatoes he will he only if I make them in 2 ways. He eats radma and loves fried rice.
He use to be a good eater when he was in baby food stage. It nose turned orange from eating so many yams and squash. I can not get him to eat vegetables and fruits. He won't go ne chop meat.

I have a wonderful side dish that my family raves. I make mashed potatoes then lay one layer down into a lightly greased cassarole dish place some shredded cheddar cheese with bacon bits, then another layer until it totals 3-bake it in the oven until the cheese is all melted and the potatoes are crispy around the edges with the insides are soft. Works best when the mashed potatoes are thick!

Just an idea..I have 3 children, ages 15, 10 and 9. Two out of the three are very picky... I have recently found they like the pasta and rice sides that lipton/knorr makes. They have a variety of flavors and they all have been successful as sides so far. Also, my son is very picky about his veggies, I bought a can of squeeze cheese and put them on veggies such as green beans and peas and it has also helped him eat his veggies. I am always looking for healthy easy sides as well. Mashed potaoes can become boring after a while. Although shredded cheese in my mashed potatoes has been a hit around here as well.

Pretty much the same thing. Offer it and try to get them to take a taste. Who knows they may like it. My grandson has found "new favorite foods" by doing this. :^O I always allowed the little ones to spit it out if they wanted to - which is a little gross, but it helps to get them to try new foods.

Any ideas for getting picky teenagers and husbands to try new things?

I agree with the "texture" thing. My husband is very leery of trying "different" things too especially if they are "mushy". I figured it out when he wouldn't eat mashed potatoes but loves baked potatoes, hash browns and french fries.

I half agree....

I like the idea of mixing veggies into "kid" food such as mac & cheese or spaghetti. However, what I don't agree with is "eventually kids tastes change". I have a 15 year old who will not eat anything that is not a burger, pizza or Oscar Meyer hot dog. I wish we had had these types of online chats when he was young. All of your wonderful ideas would have been a great help to me back then!!!!

I mix veggies into rice or macaroni & cheese. I don't try to sneak it in b/c my son can spot the colored specks from a mile away! I tell him to take a bite so he can taste that the added peas/green beans/ broccoli/etc. will taste just like the macaroni (or whatever it's added to.) It usually works.

Also, an array of dips helps- ketchup, cheese, ranch, barbecue- may sound gross to you and I, but kids tend to like those sorts of things. Usually, in the act of dipping, my son ensd up taking a few bites of the "offending" veggie.

In then end, just keep trying and eventually kids tastes change.

I get the feeling sometimes that kids know more than they let on. "Haha, look what I can make mommy and daddy do. Shh, don't tell them I actually LIKE carrots."

lol ;)
