Not something we eat often, but they're a nice side and go well with ham:
BACON & WATER CHESTNUT WRAPS
1 lb. bacon (cut in half) 1 can (16 oz.) water chestnuts (whole & peeled)
Wrap bacon around chestnuts and hold together with toothpicks. Place in glass 9 x 13 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes
SAUCE:
3/4 cup ketchup 1/2 cup sugar 1/3 cup brown sugar
Cook the sauce ingredients on top of the stove until dissolved. Pour over the chestnuts and bake for 10 more minutes.

I recently hosted 12 for dinner. The one side dish that got RAVE reviews was the Broccoli, Tomato and Bacon dish. It's super-easy and looks so festive! My kids, who hate veggies loved this (I think because of the bacon!). You'll need the following: 2 cups broccoli florets 8 slices bacon one onion 2 cups grape tomatoes
I did practically the whole dish the night before and heated it through on the stove 30 minutes before serving. A great time-saver was to freeze the bacon, then chop it up before cooking it. Set bacon to side. Chop the onion coarsely, cook in 1 Tablespoon of the bacon drippings. (okay, so it's not THAT healthy, but yumm-o!) While that is softening and turning golden brown, not crispy, boil water for broccoli. Cook it for only a couple of minutes and plunge it into ice water to keep the green color. Bag up everything separately if you're making it ahead. If not, place broccoli in with the sauteing onion, add the tomatoes. Cook over medium heat until some of the tomatoes begin to burst and everything heats through. Just before serving, toss with the bacon. Sounds like a lot, but you can do so much of it simultaneously.

I'm doing Christmas dinner for the first time this year as well. I'm having ham with a orange marmalade glaze, carrots, garlicky sauteed spinach, creamy red potatoes, rolls and maybe apple slices sauteed in butter and cinnamon sugar. We're also having a cheese, olive and fruit tray plus hot artichoke dip and a cold dip with assorted veggies and crackers and nuts to round things out. I'm also going to make the pomegranate cosmo on this website.

You could include some type of green veggie, even a nice garden salad goes well with ham and it's super easy! For my green side I am making a brussels sprouts recipe I found called garlic brussels sprouts. Fresh green beans are always easy and delicious. Good luck!

There are a lot of options you can use for serving along side the ham. You can use the traditional meal for holidays such as stuffing, green beans, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce. I am planning on serving ham this year and I will be serving potatoe salad, seasoned rice, steamed brocolli and rolls. You could also add a sweet potatoe casserole. I hope this helps.

Welcome to the Message Boards, yancy.
Sounds good so far. Have you checked out the Holiday Menus under the "Entertaining" section of the menu above? There are some good ideas there.
I would have some appetizers - easy finger foods - for before the meal and another side. Maybe a veggie tray with dip would work or a cheese and cracker tray, too? Cheese balls seem to be a popular idea this year. I would add a salad like the Asparagus, Boston Lettuce and Orange Salad to the main meal.
