My oldest son told me that he isn't coming over for Thanksgiving as we are having it on Sunday, my daughter is taking off to her friends house, so it will be me and my hubby for the day, not cooking, having leftovers from Sunday. Good thing for Microwaves!!

I still really love Thanksgiving. It's my favorite of all the holidays. I think it's because we give thanks for just being family. I love it when there is a crowd, but it's good even with just my husband and myself.

I am so sorry to hear that you lost both parents at the holidays, it is very hard.
I would love just to have one big open house on Thanksgiving, having people in and out to keep my mind off other things, cooking and baking keep mind going...like I need all those cakes and goodies.....(smile)......

Thank you, it is getting harder to let go as he is the youngest and the oldest son moved out a month ago, so daughter who is middle child is still at home. Thank you for the suggestions on what to send him for Christmas, but I was told while they are in boot camp, the only thing they can receive is letters, nothing else, no goodies or anything and one his favorite is my puzzle cookies I make, I will make him plenty before he leaves.
You must be very proud of your brothers and nephews for being in the service. It is hard on them as it is on us being away from home.
My Dad was a Navy man for 30 years.

Donna,
Both my brothers, and a few of my nephews, have all been gone over holidays at one time or another because of being in the service. It's a difficult time, because you are proud, but you want them home.
For Christmas I'd have my brothers mail me a list of what they wanted, and their troup. Not big things, but licorice can be hard to find when you're far from home, so I asked for a list of little things that would make it homey for them, and sent one big present for them all to enjoy. He said it helped them bond, made it feel like Christmas because it was a "group" thing, and no one felt left out.
Give him a big hug for all of us for being brave enough to serve our country; I'm proud of him, too.

Holidays are a sad and sentimental time for me because each of my parents died on a significant holiday, my dad on Thanksgiving Day and my mother on New Year's Eve. Even after all of these years, it's still poignant to sit down for Thanksgiving dinner.
Holidays can be very stressful and this year promises to be more stressful than most for many families. And like many, we are discussing ways to limit expenditures while making the holidays joyful and celebratory.

Thank you, He is counting down the days until he leaves.
Christmas is his favorite time of year and his birthday is 10 days before it too, so he will not be home for that and he will be 21 and he can not celebrate it......
The killer is going to be packing his room up in a few weeks, that will hit me hard....empty nesy....older son moved out a couple of months ago, now younger son, daughter is still at home....at least I will have her....

I LOVE Halloween, but as for the two big ones coming up, Thanksgiving and Christmas, I'm sort of ambivalent. I have reasons to like AND dislike those holidays.
What I find helpful is to spend my time doing things that really make me feel like I'm making the holiday my own and that helps me get in the spirit. Volunteering for needy people or animals, decorating the house, buying a useful gift or bag of groceries and spending some time with a house-bound person, watching White Christmas... you get the picture.
It usually works.. especially White Christmas.

Oh, Donna! My heart goes out to you and your family. It's so much harder than when they go off to school...
It sounds as if your youngest son loves Christmas and the holiday season. Take lots of pictures to send to him. He will be missing you as much as you will be missing him -- maybe more as he will be in a new environment and far from family. (I know that doesn't make it any better...) Bless you. Your family will be in my prayers.

Right now I am not too happy about the holidays either, my youngest son is leaving 3 days before Thanksgiving to go into the Air Force, yes, I am very proud of him, but will miss him like crazy, I will have my older son and daughter at home. So Thanksgiving dinner will be on a Sunday this year and not on the day it should, that way we can have a family meal together.....also Christmas decorations will be up for him, as he wants to decorate before he leaves.

*blush* Thank you both.
It's my philosophy to keep myself sane in my life. I have a very diverse family and there is always a chance of someone feeling left out unless you make celebrations about the fun of living.

Hello =)
I agree with Emma. 2 year olds have no expectations or anything to "fit" in with. You're free to make your own traditions that the two of you can enjoy each year. As long as you to have a good day with it then it's right.
