I just wanted to let everyone, when making the Shirley Temples for the kids, double-check your grenadine, especially if you buy it at the same place you get the wine or champagne. Some states require all products sold in liquor stores to have at least %1 alcohol.
Also, when I make Shirley Temples, I add cherry juice instead of grenadine, as well as a few cherries. My daughters love it!

I haven't had these for years! My dad used to make these for me & my sisters. Love em! Although we called them "eggs in a nest". Thanks for reminding me of these, I will have to make them for my family!

Oh! Your mention of champagne glasses reminded me. Our stores have non-alcoholic bubbly - I think it's sparkling apple juice or sparkling pear juice. That's always fun to give the kids when you have your own glass of wine of champagne.
Otherwise, my neighbor got my girls hooked on 'kiddy cocktails'. I think they are Shirley Temples? Mix orange juice with 7Up or ginger ale, then add little grenadine for color.
Another idea would be to put a scoop of strawberry sherbet in a glass of 7Up. It tastes sooo good!

My family of 5 does a family Valentine meal as well. We get the disposable plastic champagne and margarita and other fun shaped cups and serve the kids juice in their while we have whatever. Main course and dessert we do fondue. Not that melt 6 cheeses and 3 liquids kind, but the easy melt some velveeta cheese in a glass bowl kind. Add some taco spice and or salsa to one bowl of cheese, some garlic and onion to another and leave a third plain. If they start to get too cold just nuke them. Much easier on the nerves then having sterno around kids under 10. I serve bread cubes, cut up hot dogs, some veggies like broccoli spears, steak fries and cubed up ham. Dessert is the Baker's bowls chocolate with fresh fruit, marshmallows and pound cake. The kids LOVE it and while its a bit of work, its so fun to have such a messy, eat with your fingers, meal with your children.

for the spaghetti idea, how about a side of fettucini alfredo? to go along with your steak and for a veggie, some steamed asperagus? you could wrap the asperagus in proucitto or smoked salmon for your special night together along with a good bottle of wine?
i am trying to figure out the same thing for my hubby...

This goes by many different names but we always called them "Birds nests". Butter both sides of a slice of bread. Normally one would cut out the center of the bread with a glass but in this case you could use a heart shaped cookie cutter, preheat a fry pan, place the bread on the pan and fry for a minute, then crack an egg in the center of the bread and fry both sides until done. Toss the cut out in the fry pan too for toast. My DH likes his over easy, the kids - scrambled and mine is egg white.

You guys are great. I may do like you suggested and do the family thing on the 14th and then our romantic meal that weekend. Thanks so much. Steak sounds yummyin my tummy, so does the Lady and The Tramp idea for the kids. And I love the idea of heart shaped breadsticks. Then the night we eat our steak, I can make them heart shaped pizza.
One more question......What about breakfast before school??? Heart shaped pancakes, cool whip, and sprinkles??? Any other ideas?

If you want steak - green beans are great with it or fried green tomatoes. Any veggie that you really like will work as a sub for the baked potato and salad. And dont feel guily, your kids will have plenty of times to eat steak with you. And besides you can always celebrate Valentines with them on Feb 14th and have a romantic dinner for you and hubs on that weekend or the other way around.

Serve spaghetti! Just like Lady & the Tramp! Have some Italian music playing in the background.
Have your dessert be heart shaped - whether it's a heart shaped brownie or cake, or if you just make a regular cake & put a heart design in the frosting. Make mini-cupcakes & have them outline a heart on a serving platter
Oh! Instead of straight breadsticks with the spaghetti, shape the dough into a heart (use the pop open canned dough if you want) & bake them that way.
Have the kids cute hearts out of white, pink & red construction paper & sprinkle them across the table for decoration.
When our kids were really little, we always had a family style Valentine's dinner. After all, we love them too!!

When I do heart shaped pizza, I really exaggerate the roll on the edge to make the heart shape, it seems to help.
You could make double baked potatoes to go with the steaks. I like to do the first "bake" on mine in the microwave to save time. Then I mix the insides with butter, salt, garlic powder and grated cheddar cheese and stuff it back in the skins. I put more cheese on top and then do the final bake in the oven. I'd also make some steamed broccoli to go with this and nice basket of good bread and butter.
As far as dessert - I would go with something romantic like chocolate covered strawberries. Melt some chocolate chips in the microwave and then dip your strawberries into them. Place on wax paper and refrigerate until you are ready to eat them. Serve with a bottle of champagne.
And, stop feeling guilty! You deserve a nice date night with the hubby once in a while!

Sounds good. I did the heart shaped pizza thing several years ago and I had a hard time keeping it in the shape, any suggestions? I used the box dough then. Maybe if I use the Pillsbury tube it would work better. I just feel so guilty eating steak and them eating pizza, but it is only for one night. Any ideas on something other than baked pot and salad to go with steak? Oh and a yummy dessert?

How about making heart shaped pizza for the kids. They can have their dinner and then after you put them to bed for the night, have a late night romantic dinner for two - flowers, candles, maybe a couple of nice steaks and a bottle of wine.

Ok! I love to go all out on Valentine's Day.Table cloth, flowers, candles, wine glasses, etc. We have 3 kids, one of which is autistic,so anyway, they are always eating this supposed to be romantic dinner with us. Any ideas? I don't really mind it being a family thing. We make placemats for each other with all the things we like about the person on them, and make fancy place cards.I guess I just need some fresh ideas and a menu idea. Heart shaped meat loaf and pink mashed potatoes are getting old, plush daughter #3 is allergic to red dye.
