There are some really cute kids valentine's cookie projects on www.letsbakecookies.com. My favorite is the conversation hearts. So easy to do and fun for the whole family.

Jen, that is so sad your husband is going to be gone so long. I hate it when mine is gone for ten days without me...
I don't know how old your children are but that probably makes it even harder on you. I hope you have some good friends and family close by so you can get a break once in awhile.
My husband and I don't celebrate Valentines Day. My fault - it is the day my first husband and I got married. That was not a good move on my part.

Aww, jen... you know, you could borrow or rent a video camera if you don't have one. Then you could dress up as if going out to dinner, make up the table as if having a romantic dinner right at home, and with that as a backdrop, record a nice video message to email to your hubby.
Or you could take the camera to places you two enjoy, but maybe haven't been to in a while. Then you can reminisce about the fun you have with him at those places and how much you are looking forward to him coming home so you can go again!

When I was younger, my dad bought me a fruit tree every year for my birthday. It was one of the hardest things to say goodbye to when we moved. I loved watching them grow.

I got blueberry plants one year. Our soil is too rich so I planted them at my MIL's house; they did great until the flood.
Fruit trees wouldn't be a bad gift.

Jewels are way too over rated. I love to be pampered and splurged on occassionally, but I would rather spend what little bit of money we have on something that we truly NEED (not think we have to have). The last piece of jewelry I had was a silver braclet that my youngest broke, so why bother.

You sound like me- I got landscaping for my birthday this year...! (Christmas was a new car, and it looks like the new computer we bought this weekend will be the valentines gift. I remember when I used to get jewlery!)

My birthday is the week before, so my husband usually combines the two for an evening out, or we splurge for something special to fix at home.

I might go to our chinese place and get 2 buffet plates to go and come home and seperate it out between us all for a festive lunch. To make it more fun we could all sit at the coffee table in the living room . The kids love it when I throw a blanket out in the living room floor and we have a picnic inside.

I make stuff for the kids schools, when it's on a school day. Our wedding anniversary is close to Valentine's so we usually blend them together for a dinner out.

LOL. I do the same thing on st. patty's day (only w/green of course). Always messes my family up, too!
For Valentines day- I always make something "heart" shaped (or equivalent) for dinner. I've done a heart shaped meat loaf, pizza (w/love spelled out in pepper strips), sandwiches, etc... I'm not sure that anyone else is as nearly admused as me!!
I did just buy pink confetti cupcake mix and frosting at the store on a whim- thought I would make them for st. v's. Though I guess I should make it earlier in the week. We'll probably head out to dinner this year, since it's a saturday!

oh no! My kids will be so sad. I love sending all the red stuff for the older 2. I added red food coloring to tuna salad one year and hubby didn't want to eat it. Kids love it! Love pink mashed potatoes.
It is harder now with the youngest being allergic to red #40. Well, we can do a fancier lunch at home. That can be fun, too!
